Michael Kearns (Trombone)

Michael Kearns is a trombonist, band leader, and composer, who is a veteran of the Toronto big band scene, the director of the After Hours Big Band, and a rising jazz arranger. He has performed with such artists as David Baker, Phil Nimmons, Ian Finkle, Don Thompson, and David Braid, and he has studied arranging/composition with such artists as Gary Lindsay, Ron Miller, Mike Malone, and the late Dave McMurdo. He has toured internationally with Broadway acts, big bands, and concert bands, and his arrangements are performed globally.

The other side of Michael’s career is education. After earning a Doctor of Music Education degree from Indiana University, he began working at Georgian College, teaching music and the humanities. In addition, he is a clinician/adjudicator across North America at such events as the Brandon Jazz Festival, Jazz Education Network conferences, Stravinsky . . . Then & Now Festival, and the OMEA/CMIEC conferences. Complementing both the musical and education foci in his life, Michael researches jazz education in Canadian academia, and he has published some of his work in the Canadian Music Educator, The Recorder, and the College Quarterly.
